Project Management Careers

Project management careers are FULL time jobs with a great deal of pressure.

There is no “punching the clock” when a project is underway. This career is not for everyone. A person that does not eat and sleep the project will not usually do a great job. A PM career can be a real pressure cooker and burn-out is common.

Project management careers are about planning, starting, leading, and completing all types of business projects. It is the application of a manager’s knowledge, tools, skills, and techniques to manage or “project” work activities in a concise and organize manner to meet and exceed goals and requirements. Project managers must be very diverse in their knowledge and skills and be equipped to not only manage a project but also lead and add their personal touch to an organizations or corporate structure. Project Management Job Description

The project management job description is also one of an organized and methodical approach to guiding the process from the start to finish. It’s all about carefully planning out each project goal and scheduling them in a precise manner so that they are achievable but at the same time pushing the time frame to the limit. The project management of a particular goal maybe lead by a single person or by a team, but even with the team approach there must be a “boss” or a person that can make the decisions that have to be made when they must be made. Day to day decisions are many times made in an instant to keep everything running smoothly and going to the company’s management team with these types of decisions is not practical. The team approach is more for the planning stages than the day to day implementation of the project.

Project management careers are available in many industries today including construction, healthcare, manufacturing, government, and information technology just to name a few. A good manager must be flexible and have the right skills to manage projects in all industries. This is not about the knowledge base of an industry but a project management job description is the same from one industry to the next. The difference is that – say in building construction – a PM will need different experience and knowledge than in even other types of construction such as road building. Many times the best project managers can change from one area to another with the help of good sub-managers with the right experience. The overall project management jobs, especially in large projects require a great deal of delegation of authority and decisions.

When looking at Project Management careers the key word is “management”

Managing is planning and organizing tasks for others. So the project management job description does not include driving the nails or finishing the concrete. It is seeing to it that each module of a project is done on time and with the quality and cost controls laid out in the projects plans. The manager of any project must be given the authority to do the job. And then in turn give out the responsibilities of different tasks to others.

A project management job description is simply to deliver quality on-time results without going over budget. This can be a very stressful working situation for those not equipped to handle it. But many are able to do this and do it very well. Project management careers can be very fulfilling in over all job satisfaction as well as financially.
